Dana and Katie, October 18, 2008
In your next revision of The School of FlyFishing handbook, we would like to
offer an additional use of the ever handy and trusted bandana. On our most
recent camping and fishing expedition to West Virginia, we discovered on not
ONE but TWO occasions when the bandana I have religiously tied around my
neck, per your wise instructions, each time I go fishing, came to our
rescue.
On the first occurrence, WHN was steadily and stealthily making his way up
the stream when he experienced some difficulty negotiating the rocks. When
he looked down at his boot, he discovered alas, that the felt sole on his
bootfoot waders had started to detach itself and was creating a flap that
made it most difficult to walk. Being some 3/4 mile away from the vehicle,
we stood scratching our heads for the best way to deal with this problem.
Aha! The bandana that you so cleverly outlined the many handy uses for in
your instruction handbook, has yet another good use.
Now, not to be left without proper wading apparel, the following day of
fishing, WHN deemed it necessary to 'borrow' his wife's old stocking foot
waders and old wading boots. Mid-way through that excursion the VERY SAME
thing happened! Only this turned out to be much worse because not only did
the felting come off, but the ENTIRE sole of the boot! Leaving him to
either hike back to the vehicle on his sock OR once again, enlist the help
of a SECOND bandana! Needless to say, this pair of boots now resides in a
West Virginia landfill.
We knew you would find this information informative to yourselves and your
future students!
With highest personal regards,
Kathy and WHN
P.S. To make this an even funnier situation, the soles of his OLD hiking
boots and fallen off just weeks before! What are the odds?
