"My
goal in taking the Fly Fishing Course in Montana, was to learn how to be
an independent fisher: put the equipment together, gear up, and get out
on the water (then actually cast well enough - or lucky enough- to
actually catch fish.) I just got back from four days fishing a couple
of rivers in the Olympic National Park/Forest. SUCCESS!! - thanks
Katie!! (I had the book in front of me, but the next time, I'll bet I
can do it without). Got into the river, worked my way up, caught a
couple of 8" rainbow in three different streams. I felt really good
about my cast, put the fly right where I wanted to, mended the line
(most of the time). My greatest thanks
to Katie for a job well done. " |

Courses in southwestern Montana are held at Canyon Creek
Ranch, a remote, full service guest ranch located 54 miles south of Butte. The
ranch is secluded at the end of the road, nearly an hour from the nearest highway, at the
base of 10,000' Sheriff Mountain.
This high quality guest ranch is situated on Canyon Creek, a
trout-filled mountain stream that
begins above in alpine lakes and flows through the ranch
on its way to the world famous, "Blue
Ribbon" Big Hole River. Students/guests stay in private log
cottages along the creek. This historic guest ranch has a unique variety of fishing,
horseback riding and outdoor activities ideal for the entire family.
The "Fly Fishing Education Vacations" for Beginner/Intermediates are offered in late June/early July. These offer a broad range of activities over 5 nights and 4 days. Attendees have ample time to improve their fly fishing by floatfishing the Big Hole or Beaverhead Rivers; by stream, creek & meadow wadefishing; and gain alpine lake fly fishing skills at one or more of 6 "top of the mountain" alpine lakes reached by hiking or horseback. Brown, Rainbow, Cutthroat and Brook Trout are abundant, and the rare Montana Grayling is also found in the pure waters of the storied upper Big Hole. This course promises to give your western trout fly fishing career a major head start.

Dana Cole, founder of The School of FlyFishing, and his daughter, Katie Cole, are your hosts for these sessions. The courses include 4-5 night's lodging & meals; and 3-4 days of fly fishing education and experience. For course schedule and pricing details see "Courses".
