Insectology |
The basic principle behind "fly"
fishing is our attempt to imitate insects or other natural foods that for
"eons" have provided the daily sustenance for fish . Generically, we call
these imitations "flys" (or is it "flies?") A simple
concept, with enormous implications for a lifetime of learning and pleasure. Fish eat "bugs" (our collective term for insects &/or the flies we use to imitate them). These bugs are in and on the water in which fish live. As fly fishers, our job is to try to "fake out" the fish by imitating these real, live insects, with impersonations we call "flies". Fish also eat other fish, a wide variety of aquatic creatures (frogs, crayfish, worms, etc.) and we of course have "flies" to represent them. We present these imitations to the fish by a process known as "fly fishing." It needn't be all that difficult or sophisticated, except that you do need to learn the fundamentals of what fish eat and how & where this food lives. That's what this course is all about. You will learn what aquatic insects are important to fish and hence fly fishers. Learn how to identify the various species. Taint hard, just takes some homework. Outdoor Courses offer "hands on" learning as students can see the various species of insects that are important to fish in the area. No better teacher than "Mother Nature."
